Transforming text: literature inspired works for oboe

In the 21st century it is more important than ever for musicians to connect with audiences. With constantly developing technologies, audiences have instant access to almost every type of music. While this accessibility is positive for the music industry, it also poses new challenges for classical musicians to keep performances and recordings relevant and exciting to listeners. Forming connections between literature and instrumental music is one way to deepen the experiences of both performers and audiences. This thesis explores new contexts in which to experience literature-inspired instrumental music.

This project demonstrates that through the performance of literature-inspired works, audiences and performers can build new or different connections with instrumental music based upon their own experiences and perceptions. This recording project serves both an artistic and pedagogical purpose, as the accompanying paper provides performance suggestions for future performers of these works.
