- Public Abstract (ETD)
Although hydrogen sulfide is a toxic gas at high concentrations, if given in low amounts it exhibits therapeutic properties to both plants and animals. Achieving the therapeutic dosage is difficult because hydrogen sulfide is a gas, and administering the proper dosage is essential to avoid the toxic effects of the gas. The easiest method to administer hydrogen sulfide is to use chemicals that are solids or liquids and degrade slowly over time to release hydrogen sulfide. These chemicals slowly release hydrogen sulfide that avoids a toxic concentration of the gas, yet the amounts are high enough to achieve therapeutic effects. One problem with these hydrogen sulfide releasing chemicals is the other by-products are potentially toxic. The work in this thesis describes the design of hydrogen sulfide releasing chemicals with natural and non-toxic by-products. Studies were conducted to quantify the amount of hydrogen sulfide that will be released over different periods of time to understand how much hydrogen sulfide the subjects are dosed with
The work reported herein also describes a method that can be used to understand how hydrogen sulfide obtains its therapeutic properties in living systems. This was achieved by incorporating radioactive sulfur into the hydrogen sulfide releasing chemicals. Radioactive sulfur can be detected by known methods, this would allow researchers to track hydrogen sulfide in biological systems to better understand its therapeutic role.
