Wearable Diabetes Technology in the Inpatient Setting

Abstract
Background: Wearable diabetes technologies such as continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) improve glycemic control and reduce hypoglycemia, yet inpatient settings often lack standardized policies to guide their safe and consistent use. Purpose: This quality improvement project aimed to revise a community hospital’s inpatient wearable diabetes technology policy to align with current evidence, regulatory expectations, and organizational needs. Methods: A literature review informed the development of an updated, evidence-based policy incorporating manufacturer guidance and best-practice recommendations. The revised policy was refined with stakeholder input and submitted for formal approval through the Policies and Procedures Committee. Education on the new policy was delivered to nursing staff through in-person sessions, Zoom meetings, and written materials. Post-education surveys were distributed electronically and via paper forms. Findings: The policy revision was completed by October 1, 2025, with final approval granted on February 19, 2026. Staff education occurred March 15–April 16, 2026. Although only fourteen staff completed the delayed post-education survey, all inpatient nursing staff were exposed to the revised policy through written copies placed in the breakroom and frequent verbal check-ins during the first month of implementation. No concerns were reported during follow-up. Discussion: Standardized operational protocols are essential for safe and effective inpatient CGM use. The updated policy establishes clear workflows, supports staff readiness, and addresses prior safety and regulatory gaps. While survey engagement was limited, universal exposure to the policy supports early adoption. Future evaluation should examine clinical outcomes, workflow impact, and long-term sustainability.
