- Public Abstract (ETD)
This recording project presents a collection of piano works by leading contemporary Chinese composer Zhao Zhang (b. 1954), including his complete piano suites: Piano Suite No. 1 Three Mountain Ballades of Southern Yunnan (1992), Piano Suite No. 2, In Pursuit of a Vanishing Sound (2001), Piano Suite No. 3, Luo Zuo and Folk Song (2015), Chinese Dream (2014), and Pi - Huang (1995), along with selected pieces from Melodies of China: Chinese Folk Songs for Piano, such as Jasmine and Kangding Love Song.
These compositions reflect Zhao Zhang s engagement with traditional Chinese music, folk elements, and philosophy. His works draw upon the diverse musical languages of China s ethnic groups, the modal systems of ancient Chinese music, and operatic traditions such as Beijing Opera, while incorporating contemporary pianistic expression. Zhao Zhang s piano works embody a dialogue between East and West, and between past and present. This recording project aims to enrich the global piano repertoire by introducing Zhao Zhang s distinctive voice and promoting a deeper understanding of modern Chinese piano music.
