Abstract
Riddles survive from Anglo‐Saxon England in both Latin and Old English. Collections of 100 Latin verse riddles were written by Aldhelm and by Tatwine/Eusebius, while further Anglo‐Latin riddles circulated in other contexts. A substantial collection of riddles in Old English verse survive in the Exeter Book. These describe a range of different objects, described using a range of different techniques. They provide insight into the material culture of Anglo‐Saxon England, into Old English poetic technique and linguistic consciousness (with some clues exploiting the use of runes), and into an Anglo‐Saxon sense of playfulness.
