Abstract
In‐law relationships are complex, yet socially significant family relationships. Several theoretical frameworks have been applied to the study of communication among in‐laws, including the triangular theory of in‐law relationships, communication privacy management theory, theories of uncertainty, and a multiple goals perspective. The resultant research suggests that in‐laws grapple with managing communicative openness and closedness as well as uncertainty. Additionally, the relational implications associated with these experiences are not limited to the in‐law dyad, but echo throughout the in‐law triad and affect the well‐being of the marital duo and the relationship between the adult child and their parent.
