Abstract
The ability of cells to sort, transport, and secrete proteins depends largely on the function of organelles that comprise the secretory pathway. The Golgi complex is an organelle that plays a central role in processing cargo proteins as they transit the secretory pathway. In particular, the precise addition and removal of sugars from glycoproteins occur through a series of Golgi-associated enzymatic reactions. This organelle also serves to store calcium and as a site to initiate microtubule assembly. The molecular mechanisms underlying the ability of the Golgi complex to carry out these manifold tasks have fascinated cell biologists for many years.
