Abstract
In the 60 years since the end of World War II, the offshore oil and gas industry has been one of the most dynamic engines of investment, employment, and growth for the Gulf Coast region. From negligible production in 1945, offshore now produces about 34 percent of the world’s crude oil and about 25 percent of the world’s natural gas. Of all offshore provinces in the world, the northern Gulf of Mexico is the most explored, drilled, and developed.
