Abstract
An important question in developmental neuroscience concerns the relationship between the ontogeny of spontaneous nonpathological EEG activity and the ontogeny of electrographic seizure activity. A better understanding of their relationship may provide valuable insights into the mechanisms of ictogenesis and epileptogenesis, and may also facilitate a better understanding of the causes of enhanced seizure susceptibility of infants. We systematically assessed this relationship across the first three postnatal weeks in rats by examining hippocampal EEG activity before and after intrahippocampal infusion of kainic acid. Our findings indicate that the appearance of pathological EEG activity is accompanied by the onset of a number of nonpathological oscillations and events. These findings suggest that nonpathological activity can be used to mark the onset and offset of the period of increased seizure susceptibility in infant rats.
