Abstract
This article summarizes work on personal relationships from its beginnings in ‘attraction’ through the consideration of infant attachment systems and their influence on later romantic and other attachments to the maintenance and conduct of relationships in the actual practical circumstances of real life daily conversations. The emphasis of the analysis is on the move away from what is inside people's heads to the way that such information goes out into the minds of others through the expressions of daily talk, routine, and behavior that indicate to observers what the speaker is thinking. The psychological model that is based on the assumption that the mere existence of similarity, attachment style, compassion, intimate feelings, or desire is enough for them to have an effect on personal relationships misses the point that communication practices are an essential feature of that operation.
