Abstract

We examined the impact does the dopamine system have on long-term cognitive outcomes in Parkinson disease, and found that lower baseline mean striatum dopamine transporter value, four dopamine-related single-nucleotide polymorphisms, and higher dopaminergic medication exposure all were associated with increased risk for long-term cognitive impairment. Thus, alterations in the dopamine system predict development of clinically-relevant, cognitive impairment in Parkinson disease.
