- Public Abstract (ETD)
My work is inspired by my current position at United Action for Youth as their Arts Program Coordinator and my desire to design and implement an elective art program that champions CASEL’s five Social and Emotional Learning Competencies through a Trauma-Informed lens while practicing Culturally Responsive Pedagogy. It is my passion to build strong bonds with youth and young adults through the creative and expressive processes of art. Art allows the creator to not only learn technique and skill, but to learn who they are on a deeper level. When we know more about ourselves, we are better at helping others. This is the impetus of these art lessons. Each piece I’ve created is related to a project I’ve designed for 6th grade students. The work is my attempt to model Social and Emotional Intelligence for the youth I work with. If I’m unwilling, as the facilitator, to self-reflect and evaluate the intersections of my identity, how can I ever expect those I work with and teach to do so.
