Abstract

A Portrait of Home is a comprehensive body of work completed at the University of Iowa Center for the Book. Two years ago, Poojana Prasanna moved from India to Iowa City to pursue an MFA in Book Arts. As she settled in this new place, the river by the department, the tree behind the Old Capitol building, the vibrant colours of fall, the sugar maple tree on the lawn behind the Old Capitol, the morphing of days into days and nights into nights on opposite sides of Earth became essential anchors of the new life she undertook. During this period of manifold growth and change, the versatility of the book format provided the means to cope with the complex emotions of shifting realities. The four handmade books that are a part of this thesis— Tree My Friend, Yesterday Tomorrow, Day/Night/Here/There and A Portrait of Home — champion the use of image and typography to find a feeling of home while illustrating the multitudinous nature of the experience of traversing time zones.
