Aesthetic and Functionality in the Design of Furniture

This thesis is a documentation of the process of designing a set of furniture inspired by Modern design. The set combines elements of basic geometry with letterforms. The pieces can be packed flat, assembled without hardware to facilitate packaging, storage, and transportation.

The form of the chair inspires the set. The development of the initial design defines the look of the set which is compressed with a bench, a side table, and two stacking stools to create a living room space for people to have a conversation, read books and relax. Users can arrange the set in different ways in commercial and residential spaces.

The design aims to create a comfortable and engaging environment taking into consideration ergonomics, user interaction, and the combination of different materials.

The furniture pieces are fabricated with plywood using Computer Numerical Control technology and traditional tools. The design takes advantage of computer-automated technology.
