- Public Abstract (ETD)
As the world lives through a pandemic, I contemplate my exploration in fabric. I think of my grandmother’s ability to sew anything she manifested. Growing up watching her sew, I’ve found comfort and connection to her through this material. As an artist who lives with mental health issues, I find refuge in the use of fabric while living in solitude. I utilize science fiction, ceramics and Gothic architecture, to inform my soft sculpture and installations to create safe spaces for myself and others when discussing difficult topics.
Through this research, I re-think and re-experience the discomfort that often comes with conversations surrounding mental health. While evaluating this discomfort, I created works in plush with soft, welcoming fabrics. I relate the use of everyday household objects to the grandeur of Gothic architecture to express the monumentality of mundane tasks.
These objects allude to the human figure and how I wish humanity could universally perceive mental health.
