- Public Abstract (ETD)
Between the Sandstone and the Heather is a body of work that comprises an artist book titled Memories of the Sea and a series of flat pieces on paper. Together, they consider what it means to “be from” through the lens of memory and place. Among other elements, the book contains naturally colored sheets of handmade paper designed to evoke the sea and the movement of water. Images in the book are printed using an innovative technique of hand-painted negatives. The flat pieces are rendered from a variety of materials and practices also found in the artist book.
This paper examines the process of finding and settling on the aesthetic choices that define Memories of the Sea. This process of discovery echoes a personal journey towards understanding what it means to “be from” through careful consideration of materials and memory.
