- Public Abstract (ETD)
Examining history serves as an opportunity to understand our present, and in a time when LGBTQ+ rights, awareness, and acceptance are in flux, the past serves as a reminder that emotions often resonate in a contemporary context. I seek to remember and share what has been forgotten, using historical references to illustrate my own personal experience. In a combined written and visual thesis, I take a multi-disciplinary approach to exploring queer identity through graphic design, animation, printmaking, bookmaking, and the written word. Viewed through the writings and relationships of Emily Dickinson, Anne Lister, and Virginia Woolf, this work illustrates that the narratives of queer women have always been a part of our history. Exploring these historical perspectives encourages analysis of the past while allowing viewers to see crucial connections to the present.
