- Public Abstract (ETD)
Captain Lord Wizard examines my ongoing photographic collaboration with Larry Sievers, a 79-year-old musician and poet based in Iowa City, Iowa. Since 2023, I have documented Larry’s ongoing practice of composing progressive metal and fantasy-inspired synthesizer music within the domestic space of his apartment, where he has recorded hundreds of full-length albums to cassette tape. Through photographing Larry’s commitment to music, media, and world-building, I reflect on the rhythms of our weekly visits—where conversations alternate between the joys of creating sound and the apprehensions of a radically free and creative life.
This body of work consists of portraits of Larry and still lifes of his apartment which trace the intersection of fantasy, artistic persona, and lived experience. The written text serves as a companion to the photographs, offering context, anecdotes, and personal reflections on collaboration, authorship, and representation. Together, the images and writing explore themes of friendship, artistic identity, and the tensions that emerge through photographing a creative life shaped as much by imagination as by reality
