- Public Abstract (ETD)
I have been intrigued by the idea that spirits and demons could live among us for many years. Caution: Monsters Inside is the culmination of years of research and appreciation of Japanese yōkai and the desire to adapt the sensibilities of the tales of those monsters into new beings that are rooted in American folklore with origins that incorporate the issues that currently plague us as a society. Utilizing paper and pulp as my medium, along with learning processes that are new to me, I have fabricated pulp paper casts from urethane molds and contour drawings made from Mitsumata pulp mixtures of my newly imagined yōkai. These artworks are accompanied by an edition of twenty-five accordion books that are letterpress printed using photopolymer plates made from scratch negatives of my original drawings and poems.
