- Public Abstract (ETD)
Created to Create is a body of work that explores the idea of function and purpose through forms of vessels. As I go through life figuring out who I am at the core and in different seasons, I have contended with the thoughts that I believe we all face from time to time; “Who am I?”, “What am I made for?”, “Why am I made the way I am?”. Hence, I seek to stir conversations about appearance versus ability. I am inspired to use vessels to explore the idea of form and function because of the scripture about treasures in earthen vessels (2 Corinthians 4:7). The vessels are important for what they represent. They are a journey of finding purpose and learning to express who I am in each season of my life. Each piece created reinforces the truth that I am created to create. My pieces speak for me, they show who I am as a person and an artist. They are an invitation for the viewer to get to know me. They show thoughtfulness, creativity, fun, joy, and attention to detail. Each piece is an outpouring of my heart. I have been given the gift of creativity and every piece I make is a responsible stewardship of my gifts. I do not always have something profound to say about my work. Yet, each one is significant. My ideas are born from simple thoughts, “What if?” and “Why not?” As I think through my purpose in different areas of my life and navigate how to fit in or stand out, I challenge myself to push the boundaries around me.
My work is a purposeful and directed exploration of color, texture, and patterns. The interplay of these three elements with the contours of each piece forms visual textures that captivate the viewer through their senses of sight and touch while engaging their curiosity.
