- Public Abstract (ETD)
In this master's thesis, I embark on a transformative design journey marked by a profound exploration of the intricate interplay between organic and geometric forms. Initiated by the constraints and requirements of grad school, the narrative unfolds as I navigate the challenges of transitioning from my organic design roots to the embrace of angular and geometric shapes. Focused on reconciling the limitations imposed by specific materials and manufacturing processes, my research takes a multi-faceted approach.
The investigation begins with an exploration of geometric shapes in nature, delving into curved and segmented forms inspired by creatures like crustaceans and pill bugs. These discoveries transcend mere inspiration, becoming practical solutions to the design challenges encountered during this transitional period. Model making emerges as a crucial tool, guiding me through constraints and unveiling the potential of new materials and processes.
As the journey unfolds, my research expands to encompass various elements of the design process, including a study of designers from the past and present, diverse materials, manufacturing processes, and the integration of architectural principles in furniture design. This holistic exploration culminates in a deeper understanding of the evolution from an organic design inclination to a profound fascination with geometric forms. From zoomed-in molecular structures to the final pages, the thesis encapsulates the twists and turns of this exploration, demonstrating the symbiosis between nature's organic beauty and the structured realm of design.
