Abstract
This project is concerned with the development of methodologies for the Electrocardiographic(ECG) gating of cardiac scans using a conventional computerised tomographic scanner(CT). With the advent of the fourth generation high- speed(l second) whole body CT scanners, it has now become possible to develop techniques for retrospectively ECG gating the data from a rotating X-ray source and a stationary 600 detector system such as that employed by the Picker Synerdyne 600 Dynamic CT scanner to produce high quality cardiac CT images. In this study, raw data from the cardiac CT scan along with the ECG signal was simultaneously collected using the Picker Synerdyne CT scanner and analyzed by the scanner's computer system to develop end-systolic and end-diastolic images as well as other cardiac CT images. The techniques thus developed, after validation can eventually be used for generating better quality cardiac CT scans of patients free from motion artifacts, to determine their effectiveness in the diagnosis of various pathological conditions.
