- Public Abstract (ETD)
The COVID-19 pandemic has altered many aspects of life, including the physical activity of individuals and the amount of time spent sitting. To better understand these changes, college students at the University of Iowa were recruited and asked about their physical activity and sitting behaviors through a survey in May 2020. These same individuals were followed up and asked about these behaviors again in September 2020. Responses indicated that physical activity decreased and sitting time increased at the initial onset of the pandemic. Later into the pandemic, the reduction in physical activity level was maintained while sedentary time decreased significantly, but not to pre-pandemic levels. Students indicated that the biggest challenge to being physically active was schoolwork. The support of others, having more time, and virtual fitness programs were reported as things that helped students stay physically active during the pandemic.
