Abstract
Design for a theatrical setting is a visual interpretation of a text, along with an exercise in collaboration and discovery to create a functional container for the action of a story. Scenic design requires levels of abstraction to create an environment for the script to take place. Theatre makers suspend their own disbelief when staging a production, and we ask the audience to do so as well. As a scenic designer, I build imaginative settings and make sure their rules, though different from reality, are consistent with themselves on a production-by-production basis. This thesis reinforces my scenic design philosophy through showcasing it in practice from my work over the past three years.
