Science and literature could seem like two separated and independent universes, but through history they have greatly influenced each other. The mix of the two can be seen not only in works of Science Fiction, but also in the obsession for progress and technology in some modernist poetic movements, like futurism.
Nonetheless, scientific words live in the realm of technical language, which is objective and clear. But in the search for representing and explaining reality, science has taken and reshaped words from the everyday, or it has come up with neologisms when everyday language wasn’t enough. Through this process, science has created new words and meanings and, with them, it created as well a new world of metaphors. These metaphors—like Black Holes, chemical bonding or the names of the quarks—can be appropriated back by poetry to use as it sees fit.
In this poetry collection, called Fundamentos de química aplicada (Fundaments of Applied Chemistry), these two universes connect in the exploration of scientific language on the context of poetry, creating a new world of metaphors that allows the author to explore not only the language of science, but the meanings that appear when this union takes place. This poetry book is written in Spanish.
