- Public Abstract (ETD)
Glimpsing Mirrors is a multi-year project through which I explored the traditional craft of parchmentmaking and leveraged my 12 years of calligraphy experience to create contemporary palimpsests. In manuscript studies, a palimpsest refers to a page that features several layers of effaced writing. In other words, a historical palimpsest is the unintentional result of recycling parchment (a valuable material made of stretched and dried animal skin) or censoring text. This essay serves as a catalog of the 14 pieces featured in my MFA thesis exhibition. The work examines the materiality of parchment and the metaphorical nature of palimpsests as creations of layers that are built up and broken down over time.
