- Public Abstract (ETD)
This thesis is the libretto and five musical selections of a full-length music-theater piece, which tells the story of twins, Pel and Eden, who ride Peloton to process, avoid, and reckon with their mother's forgetting. Every once in a while, they bring her flowers. And every once in a while, she remembers their names. The libretto and music abide by their own logic, stepping in and out of linear narrative time, song genre, and traditional/extended musical techniques.
Watching both of my parents care for their parents as they aged, forgot, remembered, fell, recovered, and eventually passed away, guided me to write this short opera. The resiliency of their spirit, watching both of my parents, who cared for me, turn to care for the ones who had cared for them, signaled some profound truth about love, which became this project.
