The aim of this study was to evaluate the oral health knowledge of legally authorized representatives (LARs) of long term care facility (LTCF) residents to assess whether oral health knowledge is associated with the representatives’ understanding of the residents’ oral health status and treatment needs. A survey was conducted among LARs of LTCF residents who were visited by the Geriatric Mobile Unit of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics. Of the 100 LARs who agreed to participate in the study, only 52% answered all of the oral health knowledge questions correctly. Overall, the number of missing teeth in the LTCF resident as well as oral health treatment needs of the resident were underestimated. For example, 76 residents had some upper back teeth missing and 71 residents had some lower back teeth missing, however only 28 LARs reported some upper back teeth were missing in their resident and 24 LARs reported some lower back teeth missing. Similarly, 35 LTCF residents needed a filling and 15 needed extractions, however LARs reported 21 residents needed fillings, and 8 needed extractions. Overall, several variables were associated with LARs’ poor oral health knowledge about the residents’ oral health status and treatment needs – most common being the oral health literacy of the LAR, retirement status of the LAR, and self-reported oral health status of the LAR. Understanding the oral health literacy knowledge of LARs and LTCF caregivers may address gaps in oral health care for LTCF residents, thereby improving their quality of life.
