Abstract

This thesis considers identifiability and persistent excitation issues in systems admitting bilinear state variable representations. Specifically, in a wide class of situations such systems result in input output difference equations which are linear in the output but polynomial in the input. We give a necessary and sufficient condition under which the coefficients of such difference equations are uniquely identifiable. The condition is algebraic and involves multi-dimensional polynomials. Subject to the underlying system being fundamentally identifiable, we give a condition on the input sequence which guarantees persistent excitation.
