- Public Abstract (ETD)
During my undergraduate training, I discovered a process of learning that consisted of four phases: Awareness, Observation, Exploration, and Integration. For years, this process has helped me create work as an actor. However, I have always known that I wanted to experience more when I act. I needed to let go of my need to control my work and make space for more discovery. My professor, Johanna Kasimow, shared the idea of “Believe, Behave, Become, Behold.” My logical mind was blown and validated all at once because these words confirmed my need for preparation and simultaneously encouraged me to embrace experimentation and curiosity through play. Words have such power, and these words create more space and encourage release into artistic revelation. Johanna’s proposal has illuminated the shift I want to take in my training and my process. Awareness, Observation, Exploration, and Integration have served me well over time. This work is still the foundation of my process. However, this way of working insinuates a desired, or controlled, outcome. “Behold” invites me to be surprised by what happens. My new verbiage and approach continue to expand my ability to reveal more of myself and find freedom within my creative process.
