Abstract
Rondo is my interpretation of the form popularized in the classical era. During my time atthe the University of Iowa, I composed my first sonata. This form is a staple of musical
composition and I felt it was necessary for me to complete this milestone. This personal success
led to me create Rondo. Rondo was composed in collaboration with the JACK quartet, a
GRAMMY nominated ensemble whose expertise is contemporary music. The string quartet had
a reading session of my composition in December of 2024, and was later chosen for a
performance by UIOWA student composers later that winter. The form in its entirety is
ABACADA. A main theme will return after three contrasting episodes, with each return being a
different style and energy. I often do not put much thought or planning into my formal structures,
so I took this opportunity to create great contrast between the sections in my composition.
Through this thesis composition, I learned about more metric modulation, extended string
techniques, and formal structures.
