Route movements: dance, motion capture, and rock climbing

Route Movements, performed at the University of Iowa on March 22 and 23, 2024, integrates three distinct practices: dance, motion capture, and rock climbing. Projections, sound, and lights respond in real-time to my dancing through a live OptiTrack motion capture system. Choreography, costuming, and staging create an unstable motion capture environment, producing irregular live media outcomes. The irregularity of the system prompts additional improvisational qualities in my performance and creates an interactive environment reminiscent of vertical rock climbing landscapes. I repeat a motion capture binding pose, called T-Pose, to create balance in the technology systems and to synthesize disparate practices in a three-dimensional landscape. Employing practice-as-research as a method to unpack the knowledge gained through live performance, Route Movements demonstrates how the amalgamation of dance, motion capture, and rock climbing enriches performance research through problem-solving.
