Abstract

Imagine traveling back in time to observe a small German town between 1935 and 1945. Picture yourself meeting its citizens and sharing their daily routines. Then consider how these individuals might transform as the Third Reich begins to reshape and disrupt their world. Would you judge them? Would you be influenced by the political climate surrounding you? If this thought experiment intrigues you, this thesis will too. Within this English translation of the first two chapters of Arno Frank’s 2025 novel Ginsterburg, you will encounter a young schoolboy turning into a fighter pilot, a bookseller constrained by propaganda laws of the time, a florist turning high-ranking Nazi leader, amongst many other characters. This translation aims to capture a moment in history that seems unimaginable while retaining the text’s literary and linguistic features.
