- Public Abstract (ETD)
Civil wars rage in an alternate version of the Roman Empire – also known as the American Now – and the Egyptian Empire is on the brink of being conquered. The last Pharaoh of Egypt, Cleo, wakes up in the Egyptian Realm of the Dead only to discover that her grave has been robbed of the artefacts she needs to navigate her way to Paradise. Meanwhile, her greatest enemy, Octavian, has set an elaborate plan in motion to steal the Imperial Throne from his father, Julius Caesar, and annex Egypt for good. The independence of Egypt is Cleo’s foremost priority, even in death, and with her newfound power she attempts to change the course of history.
Spells for Going Forth by Daylight, a full length play for ten actors, challenges the dominant narrative of history by amplifying the erased narratives of the conquered. Through a structure that incorporates mythology, the broadcast reality perpetuated by the media, and secret history, the play grapples with the question of what specific revolutionary actions need to be taken to counter the destruction wrought by humankind. Is progress possible in a world where power always seems to be in the possession of the most dangerous person imaginable?
