Abstract
Interdisciplinary decision-makers and skilled sustainable development professionals are needed to help solve wicked climate change issues and the disproportional impacts of environmental hazards. However, students need the knowledge and skills to develop into sustainability professionals who will help change the course of climate change. Therefore, higher education institutions should focus on providing well-rounded sustainability programs such as the Sustainable Development Master’s Program at the University of Iowa. In this thesis, I reflect on my experiences as a master’s student in the SDG program at Iowa, covering the AASHE STARS report, the IISC Capstone project, and my academic courses.

Climate change and environmental hazards continue to harm the planet, people, and the economy and we have many skilled, sustainability professionals working on solving these issues. However, sustainability professionals must have well-rounded skills and knowledge to create solutions that are truly beneficial for people and communities. Therefore, higher education programs need to emphasize the importance of all areas of sustainability (i.e. people, planet, profit) to create professionals who can make impactful decisions. In my Sustainable Development Master’s Program at the University of Iowa, I found an emphasis on teaching well-rounded skills and knowledge, and I have developed into a considerate decision-maker through my projects and academic courses as a result.
