Climate change and environmental hazards continue to harm the planet, people, and the economy and we have many skilled, sustainability professionals working on solving these issues. However, sustainability professionals must have well-rounded skills and knowledge to create solutions that are truly beneficial for people and communities. Therefore, higher education programs need to emphasize the importance of all areas of sustainability (i.e. people, planet, profit) to create professionals who can make impactful decisions. In my Sustainable Development Master’s Program at the University of Iowa, I found an emphasis on teaching well-rounded skills and knowledge, and I have developed into a considerate decision-maker through my projects and academic courses as a result.
