The angel who never fell from grace: approaching trauma through translation in Yu Lihua’s 【小三子, 回家吧】

This thesis contains a translation of several chapters from the beginning and end of author Yu Lihua’s 【小三子, 回家吧】(Please Come Home, XinMei). It’s then followed by an afterword that analyzes the text and contextualizes it in the literary scene. Discussed are the ethical questions that arise when choosing to translate a trauma narrative; my own approach to a responsible translation; and a critical analysis of the translated text that examines how the original work differentiates itself from the appropriative “trauma porn.” Ultimately, the thesis concludes with a reflection on how writing and translating trauma can be a means to rewrite victimhood and aid in the healing process.
