One of the hallmark signs of periodontitis is bone loss around the tooth, and it is one of the most prevalent diseases throughout the world. In the United States, almost half of adults over the age of 30 have periodontal disease. If an individual does not receive treatment, they will likely experience tooth loss. When someone loses a tooth, today’s gold standard for replacing it is a dental implant. Just like bone loss around teeth, bone around implants could undergo resorption, which is called peri-implantitis. Currently, there is no single clinical strategy that is utilized to predictably treat peri-implantitis. While we know there are some similarities between the development of periodontitis and peri-implantitis, there is a lot we still do not understand.
Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze the DNA from tissues around the teeth of periodontally healthy individuals and compare it to the DNA from tissues around an implant with peri-implantitis. By analyzing the differences between the DNA, we attempted to determine the etiology of peri-implantitis. If we can better understand what causes peri-implantitis we may be able to use that information to create a more predictable way to treat this condition.
