- Public Abstract (ETD)
The Mentsh of Pozaizder is a reimagining of Bertolt Brecht, Elisabeth Hauptmann, Ruth Berlau’s 1941 play The Good Person of Szechuan which explores Brecht’s dramaturgy through an early modern, Ashkenazi Jewish lens.
When Hendl is declared one of the Tzadikim Nistarim, one of thirty-six righteous people on Earth by a roving band of Prophets, she opens a tavern in the town of Pozaizder. Hendl’s good nature, met with apathy and abuse by her neighbors, comes to an end when she transforms into her rigid, business-minded cousin Mendl.
Brecht’s exploration of altruism in a predatory capitalist landscape collides with Talmudic values and Jewish anarchism in this play with songs.
