- Public Abstract (ETD)
The Escapist is a short narrative film. The protagonist character of the film is a Bangladeshi immigrant writer living in the US. He is stuck in writer’s block and trying to find a way to complete his story. In the meantime, he received confirmation from his mom that his childhood favorite, a toy horse, had been missing. Losing this toy also occupies his mind during the writer’s block. In the afternoon, he went outside and met his ex-girlfriend who is leaving the city permanently. There, he talks about the story he is writing and the event of losing that toy. During the conversation, he catches something from his ex-girlfriend's speech and rushes home to finish the story. After going to bed at night, he hears that his toy horse is neighing from a distance. He leaves the apartment and discovers himself in a field out of nowhere. He sees that the horse, in a live form, is standing there. He goes closer to the horse and caresses it. The horse leaves him. This thesis discusses the making of the film and the ideas behind it.
