- Public Abstract (ETD)
- This MFA thesis consists of a selection of poems translated from the Kurdish written by Rafiq Sabir, as well as an accompanying critical introduction contextualizing the poet and his work and explaining the key strategies in my translation. The poems I have translated for this selection include two long narrative poems and nine short ones, which complement each other thematically, written between the years 1992 to 2012, from Slemani, the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, across Europe and all the way to Sweden. In this selection, I have sought to represent some of the reoccurring elements that are so characteristic of Sabir’s writing: a narration of a physical and internal journey, poems that describe home and exile, convergence poems that describe the moments of his transformations. The critical introduction offers historical background to understand the occasions for the poems, but also to understand the disconnection between his politicized life and his abstracted poetry as a powerful tension in his writing.
