- Public Abstract (ETD)
Timeless Motion: Practicing Re/clamation endeavors to locate possibilities of self-determination within the socio-culturally situated dancer. The textual term, re/claim, becomes a lens for reflecting on rehearsal methods, collaborative creation, and community in dance performance. From her perspective as both co-creator and performer, Remmers tracks the development of methodologies that seek to empower the performer and enliven the intentional processes developed within dance work. Re/claim serves to illuminate a practice of intervening and rehabilitating personal and creative agency. It magnifies performance motivations and discoveries in the face of acculturated modes of dance training that are embedded into the dancer’s physicality. In choreographed dances and devised transitional in-betweens, Remmers interfaces the varied dynamics of performance agency constituted through the distinct relationships that these formats offer. Timeless Motion works to subvert assumed social scripts and amplify layers of intent, labor, artistry, relationship, and complex personhood.
