- Public Abstract (ETD)
This research explores narrative through ballet inspired movement and projection, using the concept of Giselle and the individual stories of dancers as catalysts for new work. The process emphasizes individuality with a focus on experience by working with stories of sexual harassment and trauma. Trapped in the Folds is the result of the research that sought to answer: What is the significance of historical context? Can the corps de ballet become autobiographical? How do emotional inscriptions affect dancers’ interpretation of movement in relation to to the Wilis and the Me Too movement? How can memory become physicalized to create narrative? How can I develop space that allows for connection, emotion, and individuality in the process? What part of the ballet tradition is important to maintain, if any? Through creative research and performance, this research seeks to shift our understanding of ballet and the ways in which it is created.
