- Public Abstract (ETD)
Otherness is invented then inflicted by powerful political and social institutions. These institutions alienate people labeled as “other,” and place them at the margins of society. I ask my viewers to consider the experience of “the other” in society, and how we participate in dynamics of fear and alienation.
The language of printmaking—its historical roots in democratic distribution and worried, careful mark making—are a means to show my concern for others. The utilitarian objects I construct are hopeful tools for survival and recovery. My robotic work performs clues for my viewer, enlightening what we cast into shadow, and acting as abject, uncomfortable “others” in a space. I put my personal gestures of care on display to exemplify empathy, and examine moments when my empathic response is futile. The work therefore explores the complexity of caretaking as a contemporary woman and visual artist.
