- Public Abstract (ETD)
”Velvet covering, Ribbonlike leaves” is a mix media installation that reflects on natural history museums/laboratories and their specimen preservation display practices as related to artistic practice display and the act of collecting as a way of emotionally and creatively engaging with natural environment. The work examines the relationship between artistic and biological process and the similarities they possess as both displaying gradients of transformation. The installation features color etchings, handmade paper sculptures, ceramics and woodworks informed by visits to the specimen collections from the Lakeside Laboratory and University of Iowa Natural History Museum specimen collection and settings intertwined with personal found object collections from field studies from Iowa City and Puerto Rico.
