Abstract
This research considered and observed the ways in which volunteer docents at The University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art engaged with elementary-age students attending a needs-based after-school program field trip. In order to collect information, data was gathered by observation and field notes during two docent-led tours. The data analysis demonstrated the strengths and areas of growth for docent training and the potential for incorporating the voices of the visitor and community into the art museum. From a pedagogical perspective, the research emphasizes the need to consider the changing nature of audiences and collaboration amongst those outside the art museum field.

Volunteer docents are a common source of art museum education, but what do and don’t they do to connect with and learn from visitors? This research examines the ways in which docents interact with elementary-age students at The University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art. From observations and analysis, new forms of engagement are considered and explored.
