Abstract

In the 2024 film I Saw the TV Glow, written and directed by trans and non-binary filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun, the voice is foregrounded as a key object of negotiation for trans individuals in altering or even preventing how their bodies are culturally mediated and inscribed upon with designations of gender. Over the course of this thesis, I consider how the film’s formal presentation of the genderqueer voice adds to the existing discussion on the voice in cinema through a uniquely unmediated or corporealized representation of the voice.
