Abstract

This project is a literary translation of excerpts of Alicia Genovese’s memoir, Yet Still Far Away. Genovese (1953 -) is an Argentine poet known for the way her work explores and reveals philosophical truth and beauty in the natural world and the everyday. While most of her publications consist of poetry and essays, this project is unique. Its structure features brief vignettes that move between formative memories from the author’s past and conversations with her mother from a situated present. The book is one of homecoming and memory, familial loss and personal discovery. As is true in her poetry, Genovese’s prose illuminates profound truths and unexpected beauty through the quotidian. Genovese weaves together the personal, the philosophical, and the poetic to create a text that invites readers to reflect on “home” and to consider how it made them who they are. This translation is accompanied by an introduction from the translator that outlines the translation approach and methods.
