Abstract
This article describes how the Geriatric & Special Needs dental education program in the College of Dentistry at the University of Iowa evolved over time. Beginning as a didactic elective program taught by one faculty person, it evolved into a required didactic and clinical program, including a Special Care Clinic at the dental school and a mobile unit that provides comprehensive dental care at ten area nursing homes. This geriatric program's goal is to prepare dental students to provide appropriate and comprehensive oral healthcare to older adults in their general practices and alternative care settings.
