Abstract

After the September 11 attack, writers turn their perspectives on the incident into literature. Merrill argues that it is so important for topics about September 11 to remain open rather than closed, because literature can fortify the soul, encouraging people to be brave in the face of uncertainty and ambiguity--the grey areas that define so much of human experience and which, like freedom, are human's birthright.
