Abstract
The Mississippi River Basin is unevenly affected by multiple water resource issues, including water quality impairments, droughts, and floods, and future climate change effects will continue to severely increase these risks. However, an effective solution to supporting the Mississippi River Basin (MRB) is natural infrastructure. which includes both natural features and engineered structures that mimic or promote natural processes over time. This encompasses structural practices that use soil, rocks, or vegetation to intercept and alter the flow of water. In this way, natural infrastructure slows and stores water on the landscape to reduce downstream flood peaks and remove nutrients and other pollutants. Our research shows that wetlands and floodplains are the best natural resources to reduce flood risk and nitrate pollution.
